About the Applicant
Hi. My name is Rich Pulham. And I believe I should be selected as Caretaker of the Great Barrier Reef.
The press has described this job as a 6 month vacation in paradise. I believe this is a real job with the purpose of promoting Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef to increase tourism. If that is the case, you need someone with the skill set to do that.
Here is what I can bring to the job:
I’ve been a photographer for many years. I’ve been published in U.S. national magazines and as an example, I’ve shot more than 70 assignments for Woman’s World Magazine.
I have good writing skills. I’ve published my own magazine and written the editorial content. I’ve also written content for many web sites. I’ve also worked doing search engine optimization. This means I have the skills to write in such a way as to help rankings on Google and other search engines.
I have a part-time recording studio and have been recording for about 7 years. This skills are important for podcasting and videography.
I’ve turned my RV garage into a sound stage for shooting video. I have the skills to not only shoot but to editing video as well.
I have worked as a web developer for more than a dozen years. You probably aren’t interested in my programming and database skills. But you would be interested in my ability to use Web 2.0 and new media.
For example, I have experience blogging. You found me here at my blog CaretakerOfTheReef.com. I have already set up a Twitter account for ReefCaretaker. Twitter can be especially useful in letting followers know of what I am doing each day and when I upload new materials. I also have a Facebook account for CaretakerOfTheReef.
I would also be doing regular podcasts. I have portable equipment for recording sound using my laptop. I also use my laptop for editing video.
Using Skype, I can set up conference calls so people can call in and participate in webcasts. This would be a great way to interview professionals in Queensland who could inform the public about their work and answer questions.
Of course, none of this matters if you don’t have the personality to meet and work easily with people. As a photographer, I used to shoot 200 weddings a year. This is a job requirement.
If I am selected, there will be a lot more mileage out of this than just a 6 month job. The contacts I make while working there will help me continue to promote Queensland by creating programming for PBS, YouTube, and other video outlets.
